Blood Money – Chapter 3

The total cost to get a resident Life and Health insurance license typically ranges between $375 and $700 all-in. This includes pre-licensing education, the state examination, fingerprinting, and application fees. If your state offers a combined “Life & Health” line of authority, take it in one sitting. This saves you from paying separate exam and application fees for each individual line.

Operating expenses for an insurance agent typically range from remote setups costing $500–$2,000 monthly to fully staffed traditional offices exceeding $30,000 monthly. Common expenses are a CRM, online storage, E&O insurance, licensing, advertising and or leads, and various professional fees.

The average salary for an insurance agent in Florida ranges from about $55,551 to $79,299 per year, while the median income sits around $43,800 to $60,000+, depending on the source data and commission structures.

Being an Insurance Agent largely means consists of doing the following things:

  1. Meeting new people and getting to know them
  2. Conducting a “Fact-Finding” or “Needs-Analysis”
  3. Presenting different products or services
  4. Underwriting and issuing different products or services
  5. Referrals and Reviewing cases annually or after major life events such as a marriage, divorce, death in the family, birth of a child, or turning 65.

Because a significant portion of an insurance agent’s income is tied to commissions, performance, and renewals, total earnings vary wildly based on experience and specialty.

For the sake of our illustrations, we are going to focus on two different types of insurance agents:

  • Life Insurance Agents, averaging $84,659 per year, with higher upfront commissions per policy.
  • Health Insurance Agent, averaging $52,479 per year, with high variation during open enrollment periods.

You must sign up for Medicare during a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period that starts 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after it.

Medicare’s annual open enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7, with all changes taking effect on January 1 of the following year.

During this seven-week window, everyone with Medicare can review and adjust their healthcare and prescription drug coverage to better fit their needs.

There is also a separate Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, from January 1 – March 31, allowing individuals already in a Medicare Advantage plan one chance to switch plans or return to Original Medicare.

Medicare targets seniors (65+) or disabled individuals; life insurance spans all adult ages. While life insurance is year-round demand with longer, consultative sales cycles. Medicare, by contrast, is highly seasonal, peaking during the Q4 Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). Life Insurance sales rely on emotional triggers or big events (such as a death in the family or a new family member); Medicare solves immediate, practical healthcare needs. Life gives quick cash bursts; Medicare builds stable passive income.

Entry-level Agents generally earn between $36,980 and $47,640 (though platforms aggregating job listings note base averages closer to $60,000 including early commissions).

An FMO (Field Marketing Organization) and an IMO (Independent Marketing Organization) are top-level distributors that sit between insurance carriers and independent agents. The term FMO is most commonly used in Medicare and senior health insurance markets, while the term IMO is more frequently used in life insurance and annuities contexts. For the most part, I specialize in the former, while Bridgett specializes in the latter. The beauty of our partnership is that it allows us to cover both bases while addressing the gender specific leadership needs of our individual and combined organizations.

Many Independent Marketing Organizations (IMOs) or insurance agencies offer massive corporate discounts on pre-licensing study packages if you commit to contracting with them.

Experienced Agents with established client lists (“books of business”) typically average $61,710 to $95,410. The main difference between an Experienced and a New Agent is the way they operate. While new agents focus on learning basic policies, building their client base from scratch, relying on scripts to sell, and having somewhat inconsistent income and schedules; Experienced agents have deep portfolio expertise, allowing them to handle more complex (and more profitable) cases. Rather than building their business from scratch everyday, they work largely through referrals and networks, earning more stable income through residuals, renewals, and overrides, in addition to the new business they write.

Top Producers regularly make $129,060 to over $189,000+ per year. To make six figures selling Medicare insurance, you need to acquire and retain roughly 250 to 300 active clients by leveraging CMS-set commissions and recurring annual renewals. To earn six figures selling life insurance, you need to generate roughly $100,000 in annualized commission revenue by closing about 3 to 4 policies per week through a volume of 60 to 100 fresh leads.

Insurance is a very social business. There are no physical products, and the entire point of most insurance products is to sustain a lifestyle or a relationship; The most common beneficiary designated for financial accounts, life insurance policies, and wills is a surviving spouse, followed closely by children. Another common option is a charity or nonprofit, including religious organizations, scientific organizations, and fraternities.

Personally I plan on leaving my estate to various churches, mosques, veteran organizations, the SPCA, the NAMI in addition to my wives or children; I have a list somewhere but it’s about that time to update it. Ideally, I’d like to add organizations that work with Haitian immigrants (and their families as well).

Outside of that, the plan to build my business is Social Media and Social Events

Recently, I had the pleasure of going to a Tampa Bay Ray’s game and they actually won! A person approached me but since I wasn’t working at the time, I didn’t exchange contact information, but the strategy of “dress really nice and be polite” is a very effective way to attract new clients.
